About the artwork

The Weight of Light The work captures a moment that is never fully explained. A woman turns her back on the viewer and walks towards a light breaking through the landscape. She is leaving something behind, though what that is remains unspoken. Perhaps it is a place. Perhaps a person. Perhaps a part of herself.

Soft light passes through her white dress, rendering her almost translucent, as though the boundaries between the human figure and the natural world are slowly dissolving. The landscape appears still, yet carries a quiet melancholy that lends significance to every step. The work holds both sorrow and hope, serving as a reminder that moving forward often means carrying something with us.

The painting is also an exploration of colour theory. Although the viewer perceives the landscape as green, no green pigment has been used anywhere in the work. The colour emerges through the interaction of the surrounding hues and the eye's ability to interpret them. In much the same way that the story is never fully told, the viewer also completes the colours.

The Weight of Light The work reflects on the unseen things we carry with us, our memories, choices, and farewells, and the ways in which they shape who we become. It suggests that both light and colour can exist, even when they have never been painted.
