About the artwork

Sáráhkká is one of the central female deities in Sámi mythology, associated with pregnancy, childbirth and the protection of mother and child. She is the daughter of Máttaráhkká and sister to Juksáhkká (the woman of the bow: hunting, the bow and the child) and Uksáhkká (the woman of the door: the entrance to the dwelling and home, and the protection of young children).

In this work, she is portrayed as a protective and life-giving force. Sáráhkká represents the care surrounding new life, but also the feminine strength associated with carrying, giving birth and protecting.
